NEW YORK, NY - November 7, 2012 - Yesterday, Latino voters made history again.  Millions of Latino and immigrant youth, workers, parents, new citizens, stepped out of their homes to cast decisive votes in national and local elections, and with their votes they sent a powerful message to elected officials across the country: "we demand respect and dignity for our families, in our workplaces, and in our communities".

Hoy Votamos por Respeto y Dignidad

Hoy, mientras millones de familias se reúnen alrededor de sus televisores para ver los resultados de las elecciones que definirán el futuro de la reforma migratoria en nuestro país, cientos de miembros de Make the Road New York estarán terminando sus últimas llamadas o toques de puertas para invitar a votantes inmigrantes y afroamericanos a que salgan a votar. Y cada uno de estos votantes irá a las urnas para enviar el mismo mensaje a los oficiales electos: los elegimos para que luchen por el Respeto y la Dignidad de las familias inmigrantes, los trabajadores, y los neoyorquinos LGBTQ.

Today We Vote for Respect and Dignity

Today, as families across the nation gather to watch the results of an election that will define the future of immigration reform in our country, hundreds of Make the Road New York members will be finishing their last phone calls and door-knocks to mobilize thousands of immigrant and African American voters to the polls. And each one these voters is casting their votes to send a clear message to elected officials: We elect you to fight for Respect and Dignity for immigrant families, workers and LGBTQ New Yorkers.

Car Wash Workers Celebrate Union Vote

On Saturday, workers at Hi-Tek Carwash & Lube in East Elmhurst, Queens voted overwhelmingly to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. This is the first time any car wash east of L.A. has voted to unionize, and it's a historic moment for all 5,000 car wash workers in New York City.

El sábado, los trabajadores de Hi-Tek Carwash & Lube en East Elmhurst, Queens votaron abrumadoramente para unirse al sindicato de ventas al por menor, al por mayor y por departamento. Esta es la primera vez que un lavadero de carros en el este de L.A. ha votado para sindicalizarse, y es un momento histórico para todos los 5,000 trabajadores de lavaderos de carros ("carwasheros") en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Workers at a carwash in Queens have overwhelmingly voted to join a union, organizers said Sunday, in the first major victory in a six-month effort in New York City to unionize workers in an industry the organizers say is rife with labor law violations.

Times Ledger: Jax Hts group rescues youth

Since the federal government began its deferred action policy for young undocumented immigrants last week, Jackson Heights-based Make the Road New York said Tuesday it has helped 1,000 submit applications to remain in the United States for at least two years.
